How Emergency Management changes lives at MSU

How Emergency Management changes lives at MSU

April 1, 2022

Brad Ferrara and Sparty

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University Police and Public Safety’s Special Events and Emergency Management Division plays a key role in operating large-scale events both on and off campus. The division recently took part in the COVID-19 vaccine booster clinics at the Breslin Center.

The booster clinics took place on Jan. 26, Jan. 31, Feb. 17, March 21, and March 28. They were open to the Michigan State University campus community and the public. All three FDA-approved or -authorized vaccines were available.

MSU Police and Public Safety’s Special Events and Emergency Management Division was the primary planning group for the clinic, following a request from President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. to provide booster shots to MSU students, faculty, and staff. In total, more than 2,500 booster shots were distributed.

“This is a true example of what Emergency Management can do,” said Captain Dave Oslund of the MSU Police and Public Safety Special Events and Emergency Management Division. “We are facilitators and coordinators of different activities.”

Michigan State University Student Life & Engagement, Infrastructure and Planning Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, the University Physician’s Office, and the Ingham County Health Department also played a large role in the operation.

“Emergency Management has a strong tradition of pulling resources together to facilitate activity,” said Oslund. “This was more than just an Emergency Management staffed event. We pulled in resources and staff from several departments on campus.”

MSU Police and Public Safety’s Special Events and Emergency Management Division is responsible for protection, planning, response, recovery, and mitigation. MSU became accredited in emergency management by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) in October 2017. The university was the 5th in the country to achieve this distinction.
