Former Capt. Matt Merony hired as new DeWitt Township Police Chief

DEWITT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Former Michigan State University Police and Public Safety Captain Matt Merony has been hired as the new Chief of the DeWitt Township Police Department. Merony served with MSU DPPS for more than 26 years, beginning at the department in 1996. He retired from MSU DPPS earlier this month.

“I am excited for my new role as Chief because this will put a cap on my career in law enforcement. It has always been my goal to head a smaller department and this one is the perfect fit,” said Merony.

While at MSU DPPS, Merony served in numerous roles including as a K9 Unit supervisor, active violence trainer, and uniform division commander. He says his favorite role was being a road patrol supervisor.

Merony says as he begins his new position as Chief, his first priority is to get the department up-to-date in active violence training. Merony took the lead on this initiative at MSU DPPS as well.

“My first goal is to use my knowledge and skill set to get all officers trained in ALERRT Level 1. The next phase is to get all the schools trained in the ‘Run, Hide, Fight’ model,” said Merony.

Ultimately, Merony says he is thankful for his time at MSU and excited for his next chapter.

“I spent more than half of my life working at Michigan State University; the thing I will miss the most are the people. The Spartan Nation is a family and I am going to miss it dearly. Go Green!,” said Merony.

Merony began his new role as DeWitt Township Police Chief on Aug. 22.
