New mental health resource available to Spartan community and beyond

New mental health resource available to Spartan community and beyond

July 19, 2022

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University Police and Public Safety’s Community Support Division is working to raise awareness about a new mental health resource available nationwide.

As of July 16, individuals experiencing a mental health crisis may call or text the number 988 to be immediately connected with a trained mental health professional. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s 10-digit number – 1-800-273-8255 – will remain active, but calls will be immediately routed to 988.

“The primary purpose for the three-digit number is to make it easier to remember and easier to get help,” said Det. Sgt. Aaron Schroeder of the Community Support Division. “There are several backup call centers, so in the event that the closest call center is busy, the communication will be appropriately routed to ensure help is provided right away.”

Right now, the majority of people experiencing a mental health crisis dial 911. This new hotline will help separate emergency and/or medical calls with mental health crises, while expediting services to get people help quicker.

“Taking care of your mental health is important. We are thankful this service is now available to our Spartan community and beyond,” said Schroeder.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 and operated by 200+ local call centers across the country. You can learn more about the lifeline through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ website.

Michigan State University Police and Public Safety’s Community Support Division works to provide trauma-informed, inclusive, and accessible services to MSU students, faculty, and staff. Community Support Division members also participate in community outreach and training programs to provide awareness and improve overall safety on campus.

You can learn more about the Community Support Division’s operations here.

As always, Michigan State University Police and Public Safety can be contacted anytime by calling 517-355-2221 or 9-1-1 for emergencies.
