The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety's Bias Incident Response Unit (BIRU) was formed in 2016. The unit works to enforce federal, state, and local hate crime laws, in addition to tracking bias-based incidents on campus and within the city of East Lansing.
Duties within the unit include performing criminal investigations, preparing both criminal and non-criminal reports, and engaging in community outreach with campus affinity groups and local community organizations most likely to be impacted by acts of bias or hate. The unit is also committed to conducting presentations to share with the community providing education on bias crimes, how to keep yourself safe online, how to report a bias incident, and how these incidents are investigated. The Bias Incident Response Unit works to collaborate with other units across campus who share its mission and goals.
