MSU DPPS priorities safety on campus, announces completion of campus-wide lighting upgrades

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) is continuously looking for ways to improve safety on campus. With this goal in mind, the department, in partnership with MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF), recently completed thousands of exterior lighting upgrades on campus.
The upgrades include the following:
- 1,420 concourse fixtures replaced with LEDs
- 1,019 new roadway fixtures installed
- 264 roadway fixtures replaced with LEDs
- 247 lanterns replaced with LEDs
“We are grateful for the collaboration with IPF to complete this project,” said Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police Marlon Lynch. “Our number one priority is to keep Spartans and our visitors safe. This project is a step in the right direction as we continuously look for ways to ensure the well-being of our community.”
This project also prioritized sustainability and utilizing MSU’s already-existing resources. ASMSU Vice President Ishaan Modi is thankful for the project’s completion.
“We are incredibly grateful for DPPS’ and IPF’s receptiveness to student concerns,” said Modi. “The lighting campaign’s success indicates a commitment to safety on campus, and I know for a fact returning students feel safer walking on campus than they used to before due to the brighter LED lights.”
In addition to improving lighting on campus, MSU DPPS is also encouraging students, faculty, staff, and visitors to download the department’s SafeMSU App. The app adds to the department’s existing portfolio of campus safety and security resources.
“Our campus is a safer place when we all work together to advance a common, shared vision of what it means to be a community,” said VP/Chief Lynch. “This initiative is a direct result of the partnership and collaboration between our department and the students, faculty and staff which we serve.”
SafeMSU can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play.
